I still don’t know what the hell happened, but today is 12 days my previous host has been down. I don’t even know who the hosting company is to try to contact them. A friend of mine had extra server space on his account and offered to put PI.net there for me at no charge. But enough is enough — I went ahead and bought a one-year account with Lunarpages and will host the site there for now.
However, here’s the problem: I’m unable to contact neither the other hosting service nor my friend — he’s Norwegian so the time difference makes things difficult — to make a backup of the MySQL databases. So I’m using Google’s cache to recover all my posts, but I’m going to lose all the comments and user accounts that way. I’m truly sorry but I don’t see a way around it at this point in time. If you’d already registered as a user here to comment, please re-register!
I will say one thing: this is the first time ever I’ve used a service that did not allow shell access. I’m so used to SSH-ing in, using wget to download and install WordPress and other stuff… I’m not amused at having to download locally, unzip, then FTP file by file. I could have had the whole site up and running in the time it took to do that. That alone may go into account when my year is up with Lunarpages…
Update: Google’s cache only worked up through a few articles so… that’s it. Everything else is lost unless I’m able to recover the databases from the other site. I thought I could get more, and I’m very displeased at the situation…
