The Battlefield Franchise site put up a quickie Q&A about the upcoming 1.50 patch, which will be entering beta soon.

The two highlights I’m most looking forward to are the two new maps, both of which are futuristic versions of 1942 maps (I always loved Wake Island in 1942!) and widescreen support — both 16:9 and 16:10!

Really looking forward to 1.50 (hell, I may even do the beta?) and especially looking forward to native 16:10 so I won’t need Widescreen Fixer any longer. (Quite frankly, I’m not 100% sure it’s even doing anything…)

Its a shame as long as this game has been out they didn’t already have a Patch for 16:10, since a large majority of people have those these days. The bases for that little factoid is that I have had a 22″ wide for almost 6 months, so everyone must have one.

I loved the 1942 and Vietnam versions of the game, but just couldn’t get into BF2. Something about it just didn’t work for me, not sure why. Might be the modern warfare, but I do love COD4, so that can’t be all of it.

I’ve not looked at 2142, but since I’ve got COD4, TF2 and WIC, that I don’t play, I can’t justify picking it up even if it is good.

I am interested in UT3 which I have heard great news about.

Supposedly the whole widescreen issue stemmed from Punk Buster, which considers anything other than standard FOV to be a cheat. Even the Widescreen Fixer app had a version that tried a technique that got players banned because PB thought they were cheating.

I was always “but… TF2 has widescreen… HL2 has widescreen… what gives?” Maybe PB is finally realizing that widescreen is rapidly becoming the future, and the future is now. Then again, I’m probably in favor of giving PB the boot altogether and finding a different system. I don’t read up on such things but VAC seems to work well and allows modern technology…

I was really, really into 1942… got both expansions, even made my own maps. I own Vietnam — it’s still in the box over here — but my pc at the time didn’t have enough horsepower for it to be truly playable. I totally skipped BF2 (I do have the demo installed though, it looks fun but I prefer the streamlined classes of 2142). 2142 pretty much sums up everything I loved about 1942, and the BF series as a whole, and gives us a futuristic setting and some cool game play modes I hadn’t seen anywhere else before.

COD4… I dunno… I’m still to the point where it’s ok offline but the multiplayer mode just sucks…
