When I first learned The Secret World was in development, I was far more interested in it than Age of Conan or most other hyped games. Finally, no fantasy! A horror-themed MMOG with more than a passing nod to H. P. Lovecraft? Color me intrigued!

Rock, Paper, Shotgun has been busy the past few days, not only showing off Funcom’s first official new screenshots of TSW, but today posting an interview with Ragnar Tørnquist, also of The Longest Journey fame, who is working on TSW’s story-telling elements. Tørnquist also has TSW info on his latest blog entry.

While I am certainly still interested in the idea of a horror MMOG, especially one that touches on introspective spirituality and Lovecraft-ian insanity, but after Age of Conan, and Anarchy Online before that, you’ll have to excuse me if I paraphrase SmakenDahead, famous for his “it’s Turbine” catch phrase, and merely shrug this off as “it’s Funcom” and hope someone better (CCP’s World of Darkness, perhaps?) comes along to do it right.

  1. I’d say that saying “it’s Turbine” is unfair… but sadly it’s not. The last thing by them I loved was my first MMO ever, Asheron’s Call, and I will never see that without rose-tinted glasses, so don’t even try. ;)

On-topic - HP Lovecraft, eh? Really? Tentacles? SAN loss-inducing nasties?* REALLY? I may have to check up on this game. If there’s no gibbering, I shall be disappointed.

    * Yes, I know that’s CoC and not HPL, technically.
