While this PUG was nowhere near as disastrous as the Carn Dum and Annuminas PUGs my kin-mate Macbeth had to tolerate over the weekend, this was my first bad experience in LOTRO.
Actually I should clarify: the group itself was great, it was the two we added after the fact who were problematic. A new in-game friend from Australia and I were duoing in the North Downs and we met up with two more cool guys who were a few levels higher than us to do the beginning quests outside Fornost. The four of us made two minstrels, a champion and a captain and we were fighting our way through the elite mobs with no difficulty.
Shortly after, a hunter and champion arrive. The other minstrel and I had a brief discussion then invited them into the group. Chaos ensued. At one point we were fighting rock-worms, carefully pulling one at a time. The huntard intentionally runs around the corner and pulls three more back to us. The entire remainder of the questing was more of the same. Neither of these two clowns said a single word to any of us. In fact, they said nothing whatsoever except for the initial “invite me” when they arrived. If they weren’t running around properly, I’d have suspected they were bots, which I have recently spotted in the game. Eventually while fighting the named rock-worm for the final quest in that area, the other minstrel and I simultaneously decided to just stop healing the jerk. He was defeated mere seconds later, to the relief of the core four of us. We rode back up to the Free People’s camp and called for a lunch (and sanity) break.
Thanks to another kin-mate, Amizar, for the hilarious satirical poster!

“they said nothing whatsoever except for the initial “invite me” when they arrived”
I pug all the time in Lotro and usually have a blast. One of my basic principles is to never group with “people” who seem to lack even the most basic forms of traits that distinguish humans from animals. :P
Fortunately in Lotro the bad apples are very very scarce. :)
This may also be colored by the fact that grouping DOES work in WAR, and sometimes when you go back to your old games you either find it is better than the new game, or worse…
For you, grouping really hit home, for me it was “I cannot tolerate the slow mo combat” because of AoC.
I am starting to think that we as MMO players are actually quite lucky to have such a variety of games now.
But, as rulez said, I am sure the majority of players in LOTRO are more mature than the majority of other MMO’s…but, you may need to detox the WAR grouping mechanics first…(lol)
Cheers..
That poster is classic. Kudos to your guildmate.
I had a few PUGs in Lotro like that and my gut tells me they are Chinese gold farmers tagging along for a ride. I now have a new policy: If you are in my fellowship, you have to participate to the conversation and not try to force the others into doing only your quests. Fail in that and you are out.
