@Tesh
I totally agree. GW does however use a veiled micro-transaction system. If you want extra character slots you have to pay. Same goes for buying the bonus mission pack. What's good about it however, is that the micro-transactions aren't required for enhanced game play. I'm worried that EA will require you to use micro-transaction for 'enhanced game play'.

@Scott
Lol! Loved the post.

I've long argued that the GW model is ideal for my casual playtime. As it stands, I'd even argue that it's ideal for the oversaturated MMO market. The only way I'll be buying into SWTOR is if they go with something like GW.

@SmakenDahed
Update: Electronic Arts has responded to Shacknews, reiterating that “no statements have been made about the Star Wars business model,” and attributing Mr. Riccitiello’s comments to a misunderstanding.

May I remind you...

Tabula Rasa is triple-A and here to stay, says NC West President

People will say anything...

Also, I think I would actually prefer this model. I am sick of the monthly and ready for a change.

There is an update on the article now:

Update: Electronic Arts has responded to Shacknews, reiterating that "no statements have been made about the Star Wars business model," and attributing Mr. Riccitiello's comments to a misunderstanding.

I can see how one could misunderstand the microtransaction thing with a regular subscription. (yeah, that's sarcasm)

and they are good in farming that gold.

Like I twittered when I first saw the SOE microtransaction announcement, this is news and we haven't seen the bottom of it.

Player housing in WoW? $10 to build your house! *Ka-ching* SOLD!

Be afraid. Be very afraid.

Yes, you prolly are wired to think EA is evil.. only in most cases, and possibly this one.. you'd be right. EA doesn't understand how to grind rep with gamers, they only farm them for gold :P

They know if they add all this little crap like pet Yoda's and bullshit like that they can squeeze more than 14.99 a month out of Star Wars geeks. This is all going to get irritating very fast.

Ya know, I'm not even sure I'm angry at the whole micro-transaction thing. I've been saying that sooner or later that will probably be the business model we use. I paid hourly for Air Warrior and others back in the pre-internet days, now we pay monthly as if MMOs are a utility service. It's just a matter of time.

I think I'm angry because this seems more like an EA "Executive Decision" than a BioWare one. And also because they're suddenly aiming the game to be a middle-game, like something casual we just pick up when we feel like it rather than a full-blown suck your soul into it MMO.

Then again... isn't that exactly what Guild Wars is? Regardless on where GW lands on your personal "MMO or Not?" meter, they nailed the full game you can pick up or leave and totally based on box sales and microtransactions while *not* being the type of microtransactions we associate with Asian F2P.

I dunno... I think I'm just wired to think EA is inherently evil and will screw everything up for the sake of a dollar.
