KAOS took some of the Frontlines: Fuel of War dedicated servers for the 360 offline twice this month to investigate problems with latency and the servers not showing up for players despite being online. The first time only lasted a few hours but apparently didn’t get the job done. The second time was thought to only take a few hours as well but ended up being two weeks!
I’ve gotten back into competitive PvP recently and Frontlines is currently my game of choice, so this is welcome news indeed! I just love the sandbox shooters. The smaller and more linear shooters like COD4 are pretty and can be fun but ultimately feels pointless and leaves me with a "didn’t I get bored of this in the ’90s?" sensation. Winning for points alone just doesn’t cut it for me anymore and neither do the tiny maps where the same battles always take place at the same choke points. I want to win on a huge, varied battlefield with multiple capture points where it’s never the same battle twice. I want my team to conquer the enemy, capturing their territory and pushing them all the way back to their homes where they cower in their mothers’ laps!
In addition to the notification on the Frontlines community site, KAOS’ Community Manager "Mitch" posted an update in the official Xbox forums:
Hi all,
Based on your feedback we are continuing to investigate the server issues. When we check the servers they are not even close to full and we see available servers when we login as players as well.
So, any information you can post in the forum about problems finding servers will help including the time and date you were having an issue and your location. What servers were actually available and any other useful information will be appreciated as well.
In addition, based on your feedback we are making some changes to the server configurations which include reducing the number of Conquer servers and adding in dedicated 32 player Oilfield and Solar Farm servers.
More information will be posted on the community site when these changes are made and let us know what you think of the changes.
KAOS has been very well-respected on Live for listening to their players and making tweaks like this which is great news. It’s really a shame the game didn’t take off as well as it should have (although launching a FPS on the PC without dedicated server support was a huge mistake, and in my opinion was the primary reason it flopped on the PC) but KAOS has been great keeping players in the loop and working with us.
When a player asked about how many dedicated servers KAOS ran per region, etc. Mitch asked the devs who replied:
There is no set number of dedicated servers. We do our best to make sure the various lobbies have dedicated slots available while insuring there aren’t too many servers which would hurt matches as a result of low player counts. It’s a balancing act, but servers are currently adjusted based on activity levels and using our top secret mathematical formula for fun. It’s also worth noting that server visibility could be affected by your region, TrueSkill (only for QuickMatches), and player count (full servers are automatically removed from lobby). The bottom line is that nobody likes playing in empty servers, so we’re doing our best to make sure that you guys get the best gameplay experience possible every time you fire up Frontlines.
Frontlines’ publisher THQ also put up a Support FAQ outlining ways to set your filters to locate servers you might otherwise miss. This was helpful for me because I’ve never once been able to find a ranked server. No big deal normally, most of the action takes place on non-ranked servers, however there are three ranked-server-only multiplayer achievements…
