At long last, this chapter of my professional rollercoaster is at an end. I’ve been on medical disability leave since June 1, 2008 and after nine months of being poked and prodded in every place I can think of (and some I’d rather not) I received a phone call yesterday that the FAA was reinstating me and I would be receiving my letter of authorization soon. Soon indeed — the letter arrived today! For what I’ve had to go through — this ordeal has truly been a Comedy of Errors — I was hoping for something a little more personal but hey, this is a government agency we’re talking about…

Our review of your medical records has established that you are eligible for a first-class medical certificate.

Enclosed is your medical certificate. It requires your signature.

The rest of the letter details specific parts of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFRs) that I must abide by and a few other things but the important part is: I’m finally able to get back into the flight deck! I wish the economy and job market were better so I could immediately get back to work on finding a better job at a better company but in light of so many layoffs in the US recently I’ll be content on just having a job for now even though I’ll be bitching about it from the moment I show up…

Pretty awesome news my friend. Are you going to be a commercial airline pilot or a cargo shipping pilot for someone like Fedex or Brown?

I’ve been an airline (regional airline) pilot since May of 2000; a captain since 2002. I keep debating if I want to make the switch from a passenger airline to a cargo airline or not. Job security is probably better since regardless of the economy, boxes are being shipped world-wide. But it’s difficult to get your foot in the door.
