Regular readers excuse this post, it has nothing whatsoever to do with gaming. It’s also one of the few (I’m sure you’re thankful) times I ever just “be a guy” here on my blog. But I couldn’t resist just this once.

I hung up my Flight Instructor wings when I got my first airline job. Well, to be specific, I had a party with my friends and set the Flight Instructor certificate on fire… Hey, when I burn bridges, I take it seriously!

When my good friend Scott (yeah, another Scott, what are the odds?) had horrible luck getting his first airline gig, he ended up taking an awesome position instructing for Lufthansa out in Phoenix, AZ.

He just IM’d me saying he’s doing a stage check tomorrow for Alexandra Salai. The same Alexandra Salai who was Playboy.de’s Miss December 2007! Turns out she’s in training to be a pilot for Lufthansa. Seriously!

Let this occasion mark the one and only time I’ve ever been envious of anyone who’s still a flight instructor…

Scott, I just have three things to say to you:

  1. You suck!
  2. Pics or it didn’t happen!
  3. Have I told you lately that you suck?

On a more serious note, I’m hoping this is great for Lufthansa and maybe even the aviation industry as a whole. When I first went to flight school in college, the male-female ratio was damn near even and it was very encouraging. Great to have more perspectives than just a bunch of dudes with semi-similar backgrounds, and many of them were very talented aviators, making us work even harder to keep up. Then I got out into the world again and there weren’t very many female pilots at all. Not being familiar with the “way things are” in aviation prior to school, I found the contrast rather jarring and during my time as a flight instructor I did what I could to encourage women to fly. Lufthansa is already well-known for their attractive crews, and if Ms. Salai makes it far enough within the company she could very well become a commercial spokesperson for them, potentially attracting a more diversified influx of both genders into aviation as a result.
