Ok so, I’ve had a few people email, IM and even messages over XBL asking why I didn’t have a Twitter account. My answer? Because I don’t know what the hell Twitter is for.
Today, I finally broke down and got my own account: Talyn328 because yet again, Talyn is taken.
I even have the fugly and useless default Twitter HTML widget thingie over on the sidebar. Seriously, that’s it? Not only is it fugly but no one can even participate from there. Surely there’s a more functional widget? Am I completely missing the point?
I still have absolutely no idea what to do with this thing.
HELP!?!?

Twitter can be compared to short text messages that you send to the web community. You can update your twitter status with virtually any net enabled device, and thus updating your online friends and associates with what you are doing EXACTLY now.
Many find this service useful, some find it annoying while some don’t see the point. I kinda like it, if you limit your tweets to just one or two per day when people really want to know what you’re up to. We do want some level of privacy every once in a while
I’ve got TweetDeck installed and also Twitbin (Firefox plugin) and… I don’t get it at all. It’s just a jumble of random comments. How the hell does anyone keep track of what conversation goes where?
Here’s what you do:
1) remove the widget
2) remove the plugin
3) never look back
Ya know, every time I see one of these “social networking” things, I never know what to make of it. I look at a MySpace page and think “1995 called, they want their GeoCities back.” This Twitter thing… I guess I don’t “get” what it’s trying to do. Maybe I’m just thinking of it too much as a web-IM when it isn’t.
This post really helped me understand twitter better: http://www.randsinrepose.com/archives/2009/02/09/a_twitter_decision.html
My suggestion is to start following a bunch of people and then slowly decide whose “tweets” interests you less (=those you unfollow). I found people to follow by searching for tweets about topics that interest me on http://search.twitter.com/
FaceTwits in Googlespace all a Flickr!
(Was gonna try to fit Tumblr, Blip and Del.icio.us in there too…then thought better of it…may have gone TOO far)
